Accessibility

The Turkansaari Open Air Museum is partially accessible. The museum area’s main paths, the forest path on Siikasaari Island, and the path to the tar boats are fully accessible. Some smaller paths often have roots and traversing them in a wheelchair can be challenging.

Out of the museum buildings, the church and the Ylikärppä House (the café) are fully accessible. Entering some buildings is prohibited for everybody, you may only peek inside accessibly. Most yards are fully accessible.

The path to the firepit site is fully accessible.

Accessible bathroom, outhouses and childcare room

The museum area includes one accessible indoor bathroom and multiple inaccessible outhouses.

The indoor bathroom is located near the Turkansaari staff facilities. The indoor toilet is fully accessible, and you may enter it by the path behind the storehouse near the haul platform. The indoor bathroom includes a childcare table, a potty, a bidet, and running water.

Outhouses are located in the southern end of Turkansaari and near the Parttuainen Logging Bunkhouse complex on Siikasaari Island. There are handwashing stations by the outhouses. The outhouse on Turkansaari Island includes a childcare table for changing diapers. All bathrooms include a potty. The outhouses are not fully accessible. The users of the outhouses must note that running water is available outside the outhouses at handwashing stations.

All our bathrooms accept the Toilet Card.

Parking

The parking area is located on the southern coast of the Oulujoki River near Turkansaari Island. The parking area has plenty of space for personal cars as well as larger vehicles. During large events, the parking area includes traffic control.

Camping in the parking area is not permitted. The barrier to the parking area is closed in the evenings when the Museum is closed.

Accessible parking

The distance to Turkansaari from the parking area is approximately 200 m. The route is partially dirt road and partially paved bridge.

There are designated parking spaces for mobility impaired people in the front corner of the parking area. You must have a parking card to use these parking spaces.

If the parking area is too far, it is possible to drive to Turkansaari Island and park there. Please ask for further instructions at the customer service point which is located in the museum area on Turkansaari Island.

You may also drive a mobility-impaired person to Turkansaari Island and return to park the car in the parking area. Please be careful when driving on the narrow path. It is also possible to get to the museum area by taxi.
